The Safety Net for Aging in Place: Planning Ahead to Stay Independent

Most older adults want to remain in their own homes for as long as possible—but what does it really take to age in place safely and confidently?

In this practical and empowering session, emergency physician Dr. Laura Shoots joins the Empowered Seniors Speaker Series to explore the medical and social realities that shape our ability to stay independent as we age.

Drawing from years on the front lines, Dr. Shoots will share what she sees every day in the emergency department: the predictable events that disrupt independence, the simple steps that can reduce risk, and the essential conversations that help families stay organized and supported during unexpected health changes.

Whether you're well into your retirement years or planning ahead, this presentation will help you understand the factors that matter most — and what you can do today to support your safety, confidence, and independence at home.

We'll explore:

  • The most common health events that affect independence and tips to reduce the risk

  • The social supports that make aging in place possible — and how to strengthen your own "village"

  • Practical steps to make your home safer and reduce the risk of emergency visits

  • Why clear planning and communication with loved ones are key to staying in control

  • How simple, accessible technology can support safety and ease—yes, even if you're not "tech-savvy"
