Whether it’s the placement of your rug or too much clutter in your room, do you know the home design mistakes that are currently cramping your style? Knowing right from wrong when it comes to interior design can help your home not only have better style, but also have better balance and order. Here are a few things to check with your home design:

Poor lighting

Lighting is one of the most important elements to great design. Having the room too dark does nothing for the space. You’ll want to take advantage of as much natural light as possible, so do not block natural light sources. Also, be sure to have more than one light source in the room. Add table lamps and floor lamps. Adding dimmers as well is a great way to get the lighting just right.

Clutter

Seeing too much clutter in your home is a distraction and adds chaos to the space. Hide it away in storage to keep it out of sight! With accessories, remember less is more so be sure not to overcrowd the space, keeping it clear, which creates calm and order.

Rugs

Placing rugs in your room that are the wrong size or orientation is a common mistake. In large areas like the living room, area rugs should act as the base and be wider than the width of the furniture. In bedrooms, they should be perpendicular to the bed.

Hanging art the wrong way

Art that is hung incorrectly on the wall is very distracting. The most common mistakes are that the art is up too high and that it’s too small. Hanging it at eye level is correct as long as you don’t have low ceilings and you’re not really tall. A good rule is that if the wall was cut up vertically into four sections, from the ground up the art should be in the third quadrant. If you’re hanging a collection, think of the whole collection as one piece.
